Ankara Kalesi is the historic fortified citadel overlooking the old city and a publicly accessible heritage destination. It has inner and outer sections. The inner walls were built by the Byzantines in the seventh century. Dış Kapı and Hisar Kapısı are the inner castle's two main gates. Ottoman-era houses remain inside the castle. Some have been restored as restaurants and shops.
